FAQs
Is Acctual really free invoicing software?
Yes. Acctual is free invoicing software for small business owners with no monthly fee and no setup cost. We charge 2.7% when a client pays by card and 1% on bank transfers. You don't pay anything until money lands in your account. There's no credit card on file at signup either. Most "free" invoice tools eventually push you onto an upgrade because the company needs the recurring revenue. Our funding doesn't depend on that, so the per transaction fee covers what it actually costs to move money and nothing else.
How does Acctual compare to FreshBooks or Stripe on cost?
Acctual is $0 a month with 2.7% on card payments and no per transaction fixed fee. FreshBooks runs $19 to $60 a month on top of 2.9% plus $0.30 every time a client pays by card. Stripe is 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction with no native invoicing. On bank transfers our rate drops to 1%. For most invoice programs for small business at this price, you're either capped on invoices or paying for accounting features you'll never open. Once you're sending more than a few invoices a month the per transaction fees compound into real money over a year.
Will my clients take an invoice from a tool they haven't used before?
Yes. Your client never sees Acctual. They get a clean small business invoice with your logo and a payment link. They click it and pay. What they care about is the invoice itself and how professional you come across. The tool you used to make it doesn't really cross their mind. More than 5,000 businesses across 129 countries send invoices through Acctual. The feedback we hear most often from their clients is that the payment experience is easier than they expected. A few have asked who built the invoice tool because they want it for their own business.
How does the payment link work?
Every invoice has one secure link at the bottom. Your client clicks it and pays whichever way they prefer. They don't need to create an account or install anything. Online invoicing for small business owners only works if the client can pay in one tap without getting routed through a signup screen first. We've seen invoices clear within 90 seconds of being opened, which only happens because the flow stays short.
What payment methods can my clients use?
Card or bank transfer (ACH and SEPA), both through the same link. Your client picks. You get paid same day either way. There's no juggling separate tools or chasing wire details over email.
How fast do I get paid?
Same day. Funds land straight in your bank account with no holds. Most small business invoicing tools sit on the money for two to three business days, sometimes longer if your account is new. We send the money as soon as it clears, which usually means the same day a client pays. If a client pays at 11am on Tuesday, the money's available to spend by end of day.
Does Acctual work with QuickBooks or Xero?
Yes, both. Invoices, payments and contacts sync on their own. Paid invoices show up in your books without manual entry, which matters because most invoicing software for small business either ignores accounting completely or makes you key everything in by hand. Our sync runs in the background and goes both ways. A client added in QuickBooks shows up in Acctual the next time you open it.
How many invoices can I send?
Unlimited. There's no cap on invoices or clients. Most free invoice programs for small business limit you to 5 or 10 a month before pushing you onto a paid plan, which is one of the reasons we hear from people switching to Acctual. You only pay when a client pays you, so cost scales with what you earn.
Is Acctual suitable for international clients?
Yes. We support 135+ currencies and global payment methods including ACH and SEPA. Clients anywhere in the world can pay you. International invoicing for small business work used to mean wire fees, FX spreads and a wait of five business days for the money to clear. With Acctual it's the same flow as any domestic invoice. Stablecoin is also an option if your client prefers it, which is unusual but increasingly common with international tech clients and remote teams.
Who is Acctual actually built for?
Freelancers, agencies, contractors, consultants and small ecommerce shops. Most users send anywhere from a few invoices a month up to a few hundred, often with clients overseas paying however they want. If that sounds like your day, you don't need a $30 a month accounting suite. You need an invoice system for small business work that's fast to use and gets you paid quickly. If you also want full bookkeeping, run QuickBooks or Xero alongside it. We sync with both.
Can I make the invoice look like my brand?
Yes. Logo, accent color, business details, payment terms. The invoice your client opens has your branding on it. This sounds cosmetic but it actually changes how fast you get paid. Generic looking invoices read as throwaway and clients treat them that way. We also remember your line items and saved clients, so the second invoice you send takes about 30 seconds.
Do I need accounting experience to use this?
No. Acctual is simple invoicing software for small business owners who don't want to think about debits, credits or charts of accounts. If you can fill out a form, you can send an invoice. We default to Net 30 and standard tax handling. You can change either per invoice. The people who use Acctual range from photographers who barely know what a P&L is to agency owners who run their own books.
